BUBT Economics Department Empowers Faculty with Seminar on Global Research Publication

DHAKA, January 20 – In a strategic move to bolster its academic research profile, the Department of Economics at the Bangladesh University of Business and Technology (BUBT) organized a comprehensive seminar today focused on navigating the demanding landscape of international scholarly publication. Titled “How to Write a Research Paper in Economics,” the professional development session equipped faculty with methodologies to enhance both the quality and global reach of their research.

Presiding over the event, Prof. Dr. Md. Mahmudul Hasan, Chairman of the Department, framed research as a vital instrument for national progress. He asserted in his opening address, “Robust economic research transcends isolated academic activity; it is a fundamental tool for diagnosing societal challenges and crafting evidence-based solutions for sustainable development.”

The keynote was delivered by Mr. S. M. Wohid Murad, a PhD Research Fellow from Australia’s Curtin University, who provided a structural analysis of mainstream economic scholarship. He delineated the core paradigms of the discipline: empirical papers that test hypotheses using econometric models and observable data, and theoretical papers that employ mathematical modeling to derive conclusions from established axioms. “The gatekeepers of premier economic journals maintain a strong preference for this formalized, model-driven inquiry, which sets a clear, replicable standard for contributing to the global knowledge base,” Mr. Murad noted, while also detailing the standardized architecture of a publishable manuscript.

Linking Research Strategy to Global Impact

The seminar evolved into a strategic workshop during a dinner session, where Prof. Dr. Muhammad Mahboob Ali, a Post-Doctoral scholar and noted expert in macro-financial and health economics, outlined a systematic publication lifecycle. He advised researchers to use academic conferences as iterative platforms for feedback during pilot studies. “Strategic alignment of your manuscript with a target journal’s scope and specifications is crucial to successfully navigate the peer-review process,” he stated, strongly advocating for targeting high-impact, indexed journals to amplify research influence.

Prof. Ali further emphasized that intellectual passion is the key driver for sustaining rigorous research, a sentiment that bridged to broader scholarly missions. This point was expanded upon by Mr. Murad in the interactive session, who highlighted the imperative of improving access to quality scientific research in low- and middle-income countries. He stressed the importance of supporting innovative research and funding early-career researchers, whose pioneering work is essential for inclusive global knowledge production.

The program, coordinated by Mr. Tareq Imam Zahid, Assistant Professor of Economics, saw full attendance from the department’s faculty. Participants concluded that the seminar provided critical insights into the exacting standards and strategic practices necessary for effective engagement with the global economics academic community, linking individual research pursuits to broader scholarly and developmental goals.
